Aberdeen, Maryland, shooting at Rite Aid distribution center: what we know

“Multiple victims,” the Harford County Sheriff’s Office tweeted.

There was a shooting at a Rite Aid distribution center in Aberdeen, Maryland, on Thursday, resulting in “multiple wounded and multiple fatalities.”

The shooting occurred “in the area of Spesutia Road and Perryman Road,” according to the Harford County Sheriff’s Office. The area is a business district in Aberdeen, which is northeast of Baltimore.

The sole shooting suspect is now in custody.

What we know

  • Shortly after 9 am, sheriff’s deputies were dispatched in response to a reported shooting at a Rite Aid distribution center in Aberdeen, Maryland, Harford County Sheriff Jeffrey Gahler said at a news conference.
  • There were “multiple wounded and multiple fatalities,” Gahler said.
  • At least three people were killed, an anonymous law enforcement official told the Associated Press, cautioning that the estimate is based on preliminary information.
  • The single suspect is in custody and in critical condition, according to Gahler.

  • The FBI and US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives are assisting with the investigation.
  • Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R) tweeted, “We are closely monitoring the horrific shooting in Aberdeen. Our prayers are with all those impacted, including our first responders.”
  • According to the Gun Violence Archive, this is the 262nd mass shooting in the US in 2018. The organization defines mass shootings as events in which four or more people, excluding the shooter, were shot but not necessarily killed in a similar time and place.
