This October, the Vox Book Club is getting ready for Halloween with Silvia Moreno-Garcia’s Mexican Gothic. It’s one of the best gothic house stories I’ve read in a long time, and reader, I am extremely picky about my gothic house stories. This one’s set in an old Mexican mining town, where an English manor house looms eerily over the village, and only a cosmopolitan Mexico City socialite can save the day. It’s a blast.

To celebrate, we’re meeting up with Silvia Moreno-Garcia herself live on Zoom at the end of the month. We’ll talk about the history of the gothic novel, colonialism, creepy evil mushrooms, Mayan gods, and anything else we care to bring into the discussion, and you can meet us there to ask questions, too. It’s all going down on Thursday, October 29, at 5 pm Eastern, and I can’t wait to see you there. RSVP now.

In the meantime, we’ll have our Mexican Gothic discussion post up on the site Friday, October 16, and you can let us know your thoughts in the comments there. While you wait, make sure to sign up for the newsletter so as not to miss anything.

Help keep Vox free for all

Millions turn to Vox each month to understand what’s happening in the news, from the coronavirus crisis to a racial reckoning to what is, quite possibly, the most consequential presidential election of our lifetimes. Our mission has never been more vital than it is in this moment: to empower you through understanding. But our distinctive brand of explanatory journalism takes resources. Even when the economy and the news advertising market recovers, your support will be a critical part of sustaining our resource-intensive work. If you have already contributed, thank you. If you haven’t, please consider helping everyone make sense of an increasingly chaotic world: Contribute today from as little as $3.
