Pensacola, Florida, Naval Air Station shooting: what we know

At least 10 people were taken to hospitals, and the shooter is reportedly dead, according to news outlets.

A shooter at the Pensacola, Florida, Naval Air Station reportedly injured at least 10 people on Friday morning, according to news reports.

The shooter is now dead, the Escambia Sheriff’s spokesperson has told media. The naval base remains on lockdown.

What we know

  • Around 6:30 am on Friday, police started to receive calls of a shooting at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Florida, according to local news station NBC 6.
  • At least 10 people were taken to local hospitals, the Associated Press reported.
  • The shooter is dead, an Escambia Sheriff spokesperson told the AP.
  • The Naval Air Station in Pensacola “employs more than 16,000 military and 7,400 civilian personnel,” according to the AP.
  • Before Friday, there were 390 mass shootings, according to the Gun Violence Archive. The group defines a mass shooting as incidents in which four or more people, excluding the shooter, were injured but not necessarily killed in a similar time and place.
