Multiple casualties have been reported.
A gunman opened fire at Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on Saturday, according to local news media outlet KDKA. Pittsburgh police said there were “multiple casualties,” and the shooter was taken into custody alive, according to NBC News. We still don’t know the identity of the gunman, or his motives.
America is a big outlier among developed countries when it comes to gun deaths — in large part because it has so many guns, making it easy to carry out an act of violence. Studies have linked stricter gun laws to fewer gun deaths. But the US has the weakest gun laws in the developed world.
Most of the gun deaths in the United States are either homicides or suicides. But so far in 2018, at least 262 people have been killed and 1131 wounded in at least 276 mass shootings.
